When my garage door had problems recently, Garage Door Restore (GDR) tried to sell me a replacement motor and their... technician who came out to inspect the door told me it was definitely the motor that was the issue.It took a second company less than 10 minutes to prove them wrong and I saved $500. I can only surmise that the technician from GDR either didn’t know what he was doing or he knew, but was trying to sell me a replacement that I didn’t need.I have no technical expertise and had I, like any ordinary customer, trusted and relied on what I thought was professional advice from GDR, had I been too busy to ask a few more questions, I would have been $500 out of pocket. As it is, I question what their $99 call out fee was for.To explain, I had my Guardian garage door installed 10 years ago. When it started acting up recently, my agent took a video for me, showing the motor running and the chain moving but the door only rising slightly.The agent contacted GDR who suggested, before they even inspected it and without knowing how old this door was, that the motor was old and probably needed replacing. I was asked to pre-approve the cost of a new motor to save a second call-out fee. I declined and told them to get their technician to call me when he had inspected the door.When their technician came out, he told me it was definitely the motor and sent me a video, but now the door was completely non-responsive - no noise of the motor, no chain movement, only the light flashing, like when it’s in the pairing mode.He said these motors usually only last about 20 years. When I said mine was only 10, he said maybe I just got a dud one. I had never had an issue with it before.To make matters worse, the motor he was proposing to install on the spot, if I said yes, was not the one they had quoted me earlier, had a shorter warranty period and he couldn’t tell me the price.Given the video he took was different to my agent’s from just a few days earlier; that motors normally last more than 10yrs (even if their warranties don’t); and that GDR had seemed too ready to sell me a new motor, something didn’t feel right.I got another company to come out the next business day to give me a second opinion. In less than 30 seconds, their technician found that someone had put the door into the safety beam mode. They had the door operational in a matter of minutes, inspected inside the motor casing and confirmed the motor condition was fine. Their service cost me $162 instead of the $645 motor that GDR was going to sell me.I feel foolish that I didn’t know what was wrong with the door but I’m a lay person. I don’t know who put it into the safety beam mode, but I would have expected any garage door technician worth their salt, charging to service them, would have worked out if it was simply in the wrong mode.Ordinary everyday people like me have little choice but to rely in good faith on experts in trades to have the experience to provide honest and professional advice about what can be fixed and what needs replacing. We are vulnerable to poor or even dishonest advice from unscrupulous operators in such matters.Based on this experience, it’s hard not to feel taken advantage of by GDR.*POST EDIT* - To their credit, after posting this review, I was contacted by GDR promptly and personally to explain what may have led to this unfortunate experience. I have been assured that it was an isolated incident and an honest oversight, and that steps will be taken to prevent it from reoccurring. They also dealt with the fees fairly in the circumstances. Their dealing with customer complaints has been prompt, professional and fair in this instance.read more

I highly recommend Garage Door Restore. We had an emergency when our garage door got stuck and wouldn't open and GDR... came to our rescue. The work was completed super quickly and very efficiently. I was at work whilst the repair was completed and it was lovely to come home to see the job done and our garage door working better than it did before. Had GDR come and have a look at an old single panel door I had running off an old motor that kept stopping halfway up.... I had another technician check the door who said this company had done a poor job. I asked them to come and fix the door but they declined.
